The first book of 2016, to which I am giving 6 out of 5 stars, this story simply exceeded my expectations. It gave me a book hangover and showed me a rainbow of emotions. Phew I wish there was a visual medium strong enough to do justice to the review and how this book made me feel, the joy, sadness, happiness and love. Love in all it shades.
Title: Ginger’s Heart (Book 3 Modern Fairy Tales)
Author: Katy Regnery
Publisher: Katy Regnery
Release Date: March 2016
Rating: 6/5 stars. Yes, that means it exceeded my expectations 🙂
In this modern retelling of “Little Red Riding Hood,” the wolf and the woodsman are cousins, and Ginger is the little girl who claims both of their hearts.
Cain. Woodman. Ginger.
When three children grow up together in the rolling hills of Kentucky horse country,
One becomes a predator
One becomes a protector
And one becomes prey.
Ginger McHuid has been in love with the “Dub Twins” – Cain Wolfram and Josiah Woodman – for as long as she can remember. And for as long as the cousins can remember, they’ve each loved Ginger in their own all-consuming ways.
One will win her
One will be cast away
While one follows her heart.
*This is a standalone novel inspired by Little Red Riding Hood, Contemporary Romance: Due to profanity and very strong sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.
Ginger’s heart, though a stand alone, which means it can be read without reading books 1 and 2 for context, is part of and Book 3 in Katy’s popular Modern Fairy tale series.

Ginger, Cain and Woodman have known each other since they were kids. They are best friends, devoted to each other and sharing an innocent love between the 3 of them. Then life happens, they grow into beautiful, headstrong teenagers and a tricky shade of love enters the picture – Romantic Love. A love which is a heady mix of anger, passion and promises. As they step foot in adulthood, their Love life again takes a turn, this time towards safety and comfort, less passion but full of longing and pain. At every turn Ginger wishes she didn’t have to choose between her 2 best friends, 2 guys she’s loved all her life. In the end Ginger has to choose whether she wants to or not. In her heart she knows she loves them both too much to choose either, but she also knows who she will chose if and when it came to that.
Love triangles by nature are messy and uncomfortable. Add friendship, passion and history like these 3 have and it’s natural for Complications to creep in. As the 3 of them tread this messy, complicated path of love and friendship hearts break, they fight and the inevitable rejection happens. Surrounded by all these complications the beauty of the story shines through as things come full circle; from sweet, simple to messy, complicated and back to simple and sweet with loads of pain, loss and tears. Romantic or Friendship, the Love in their lives is strong and has such a magnanimous presence that it literally makes their world go round and round.
Love is the heart of this story no doubt, but the 3 main characters are also strongly bound together by emotions other than Love. Cain and Woodman share a bond deeper than blood brothers, a friendship and love they fiercely protect. A friendship between Ginger, Cain and Woodman, their understanding and awareness of each other is the type of friendship which is bound for life. Then there is the bond which these 2 share with Ginger individually. On one end she has overprotective parents and a best friend who sees her like a delicate doll. On another end she has a grandmother and her other best friend, her fierce champions and people who believe she is strong and brave.
The author presents the emotions of these 3 with such clarity that you can’t help but feel the same. You will feel their rawness, longing and love with a force that will leave you speechless. After a while, I lost count of the times I cried and the emotions overwhelmed me. Besides the overwhelming Love and at times pain it is heartening to see these kids blossom into handsome, responsible adults. From sweet and full of swagger to sassy and irresistible, they come into their own and become the type of people who you can depend on and love effortlessly. It is the kind of story which will always stay with you once you have read it.
My absolute favorite is Cain because he has an unforgettable presence, wanderlust, fierceness, a charming swagger and he rides a bike all over the country and beyond which gives his character a sense of adventure. A wolf, he definitely portrays Wolf well. All the characters have a strong individuality and make their presence felt but some just leave their mark more strongly. I am #TeamCain right from the start. Having read the story, I won’t ask you to choose, but do comment and tell me about your favorite bits. My favorite is the conversations between Cain and Ginger (like the one in the image below), the friendship between Ginger and Woodman and the bond she has with her grandmother.
A lesson learnt: True Love shines through everything and makes its presence felt strongly even without words. Just a look sends everything crackling with energy and sparkling with life.
The simple emotions of happiness, pain, loss and Love are elevated and you have to read it to experience them in their intended form. This story exceeded my expectations, made me relive some golden memories and kept my belief in Love strong for future. I wouldn’t want anything changed in it.
So, if you think classic fairy tales are good, you will love this modern fairy tale all the more, I absolutely loved it. I sincerely hope you will love Ginger’s Heart as much as I did, it definitely puts the Love in Love Story.
