Dare to Take by Carly Phillips, Book Review

I recently reviewed another series of Carly which she wrote with Erika Wilde, but this is my 1st review of Carly’s Dare to Love series. I am addicted to contemporary family sagas because of Carly’s books especially her Dare Series, it’s simply engrossing and addictive. Today I talk about how much I like the latest in the Dare to Love series, Book 6 – Dare To Take which is the story of Tyler Dare and Ella Shaw. Another hot, emotional story from Carly and I loved it to bits.

She was off limits… But he couldn’t resist.
There are just some guys you don’t touch–even someone as innocent and inexperienced as Ella Shaw knows that. But when her brother’s best friend is up for grabs and willing, she can’t resist. After all, she’s wanted him for years…
On leave from the army, Tyler Dare was just looking for a little fun, but his best friend’s sister is off limits. Yet unable to deny how sexy and alluring she is, he finds it all too easy to succumb to a night of passion and heat that ends the next morning in the worst way possible.
Now years later, Ella is stranded on a tropical island with a hurricane bearing down, and only Tyler can save her. It’s his chance to make amends for the past and show the woman he’s never forgotten that he’s coming after her . . . in more ways than one.

My thoughts:

DtT is Tyler and Ella’s story. Tyler is the 3rd/5 child and Ella is his youngest sibling Avery’s best friend. Both have deep seated issues stemming from mistrust, cheating parent, loss of family and such. Everyone says it’s hard for children of Divorce, yes it is, but it gets more complicated when the divorce is a result of cheating and the parent/s just won’t quit their nasty business. When the divorced parent/s stays in their child’s life, keeps repeating the same mistakes, and burdening them with it, it’s only a miracle if the children don’t carry scars and emotional baggage. Tyler Dare is a tough man on the outside, an ex-army guy who has a sweet, complicated and burdened heart. Ella has her own set of issue, losing her Mom as a 5 year old, a step mother at 8 and along the way her Dad is just a physical presence until she becomes Avery’s best friend. The Dare family is everything to Ella what her family could never be.

So we have a hot, handsome and somewhat emotionally troubled Tyler, his sassy sweet sister and her attractive best friend Ella. It’s a clichéd setting sure, but there’s more to this cliché and I absolutely enjoyed reading all about it in this story. Spending her holidays and so much time with Avery and the Dare family, Ella inevitably falls for Tyler. So when she gets a chance she doesn’t hesitate being cozy with Tyler, when he is back for the Holidays and both have had one too many drinks. What follows is Tyler’s issues raising their ugly head and pushing Ella towards self-doubt and new issues to cope with while he runs back to the Army life. Tyler and Ella grow up to be beautiful, brave human beings who have had quite a bit of practice controlling their issues and keeping them in check. However, none of them imagined how it would be to talk about their night together years later, when both especially Ella are emotionally as vulnerable to each other as before.

What I love about this story is how Tyler owns up to his mistakes and makes it his mission to right his wrongs; especially make things right with Ella. When they are caught up in a hurricane with Ella in the hospital, Tyler acknowledges what his heart already knew, he is still attracted to Ella. This time around however there’s more than attraction that he feels, Tyler is determined to fight his fears and be there for Ella at least as long as she allows him to make things right and she feels safe and strong about him.

When 2 people who are hot for each other, feel strongly about each other physically and emotionally things are bound to happen, like some super-hot chemistry and loads of passion. The best part about this story is how they both face their issues and fears. Before they can make a place for each other in their hearts they willingly decide to deal with the past and whatever is stopping them from having a full, happy life together. There’s nothing not to like when people in love make a go for it and build a strong foundation for their future.

I enjoy reading family sagas as they give a depth to the story and as characters keep appearing in each stories you get a better understanding of them. Dare family sure has Alpha men and strong women but they are also a happy, strong family who take things head on and don’t let setbacks stop them. Tyler and Ella have some toe curling, hot, dirty chemistry between them and they also share a great emotional connect. It’s not just fiery passion but some deep thoughtful emotions too which makes it a great read. A perfect read for beating some mood blues with a playful steamy story like Tyler and Ella’s.

If you are looking to start a new series and like Alpha men and their equally smart, sassy women with a strong family backdrop, I can’t recommend the Dare to Love series enough. Passion and emotional depth in good measure is just what makes it a beautiful series to read.

So are you ready to meet Tyler and Ella!
