Self help books often leave a lot to be desired. They preach more then they equip you with practical tools that beg to be tried and tested. In short a lot more is left to be desired. That’s why I am always wary of them and generally read them less or when I do, I take their advice with a side of salt not just the proverbial pinch of salt. The Calling was sent to me a while back when my review list was high and threatening to topple on the desk. I informed the PR team that I cannot assure them a final date to review. I am way over my promised delivery date, sorry for that Team PKTS.
I wanted to read this book as I found it different from the preachy ones. This one had a story to tell and like all Indian folktales it has gems of life hidden in between the lines, which is the reason I wanted to read it. Kudos to the author for making the narration simple, easy to grasp and follow. I got what I hoped for and that’s the reason this is longer than my usual reviews. So grab some delicious drink, sit back and read what The Calling is all about and how you can find your own.

The Calling is Arjun’s story of his journey to finding himself in the mess he has created of his life.
Arjun is a high flying executive, earns bigs, messes up big time too, his life that is. He is attached to his phone, works more than required, channels his own frustrations and self esteem issues on his wife and family. Arjun thinks so high of himself that when the rest soar higher than him he lashes out. Like a peacock he shows off and sees himself perched on cloud 9.
Soon the pretense, running the rat race, working and not getting the desired results catches up to him. As work gets more demanding and the wife threatening to dissolve his family he grows restless and bursting at the seams with negativity. Amidst all the chaos he takes a work trip from Delhi up in the nearby mountains.
The mountains are treacherous and have their own rules and ways to deal with the people treading on them. This short trip turns to be life changing for Arjun who gets into an accident and manages to come back from death’s door. Every near death experience is said to have shown the person the light, hand of God, a mystic talking to them either pulling them into the light or sending them back with a renewed purpose of life. Whatever the reason, soon after such terrifying experience people tend to change or atleast display certain behavioral changes.
Same goes for Arjun, he escapes death and by the time he regains full consciousness and grasps what happened to him, he’s met the infamous mountain sage and gotten himself a way out of the mess he’s created of his life.
Arjun is on a mission from the mystic Sage to travel to the holy shrine of Hemkund Sahib on the Indo-China border. A journey which will help him untangle the mess his life is in and start his life afresh. That’s the journey Arjun takes to find his Calling. The journey and the things Arjun witnesses on his 20 km jounrey from the airport to the shrine accompanied by the transporter Chandu is how my dear reader we get the way to our own callings.
The mountainous journey to the shrine is said to be dangerous, treacherous and not all can complete it. It is said to be a way in the midst of heaven to a new you. Surrounded by Himalayas and hostile climate it is as breathtakingly beautiful as it is a dangerous path. Often people see and hear things within them when surrounded by nature, utter beauty and solitude. It is in these moments when we listen to what is within us that we get to clear the cobwebs in our soul. When we take time to listen to ourself, put in effort to clean the rubbish we have hoarded in our lives emotionally we get a clean slate. A clean clear path to write our future on.
We humans have the excellent opportunity to continually renew, rewrite and better our lives. Hell we get a fresh morning every 24 hours to start anew and put the past behind us.
Do we do that, do we listen to ourselves and clear the clutter unless we are deep in shit and have no way out? Do we do something willingly unless we are threatened to loose everything? No! we humans are generally lazy. Same happened with Arjun but when he was forced to loose control due to accidents he met the mystic sages, sadhus who showed him a path. The very sages whom he saw in his dreams are no one else but the voice within himself and when Arjun realises this he knows what his next step is supposed to be.
The moment Arjun realises what he is and what he wants to be, how he wants his life to be is the moment his life turns for the better. His belief in himself and the clarity he has of his position in the world, in nature is what allows him to find his Calling.
So in simple terms my fellow readers, read this story and find where you stand. What are the things you are missing by not letting go of the unnecessary stuff in your life. Read it to allow yourself to take the journey which will help you to bring you closer to the path of your Calling, your purpose, your happiness in life.
