Title: Christmas At The Candied Apple Cafe
Author: Katherine Garbera
Publisher: Harper Impulse
Publication Date: 10th November 2017
There’s nothing so magical as Christmas in New York…
Santa is coming to New York!
Snow is falling, excitement is high and the delicious scent of chocolate drifts along Fifth Avenue the Candied Apple Cafe is ready for Christmas! And no one is busier than publicist Iona Summerlin. With so much to do, she doesn’t have time to think about men, dating, or the fact her last boyfriend ditched her for her brother Relationships are off the menu!
Hotel boss Mads Eriksson is not looking forward to the first Christmas since losing his wife. His six-year-old daughter Sofia has lost her belief in Christmas magic along with her mother, and he has no idea what to do. But an unusually festive business meeting at the Candied Apple and meeting the beautiful Iona starts to defrost Mads’ frozen heart, and suddenly life seems full of light and sparkle again.
If only they dare to believe, maybe all their Christmas dreams will come true!
Mad’s and Iona’s story is set in New York, with the Candied Apple Café bringing them together. The café brings them together initially for business purposes, where they meet several weeks before Christmas. What started as a business acquaintance quickly grows into something deeper and more than friendship. The other central character involved is Mads’ 6 year old daughter Sophia.
Soon, all three start spending more and more time together and things get complicated yet cosy and comfortable between them. Christmas is all around them and with various parties, shopping and other festive opportunities they resemble a family unit. By the time Christmas comes around things get serious and it’s time to make decisions. Mads is still battling from the grief of loosing his wife last Christmas, so is Sophia loosing her mother. Iona has never let herself fall completely for someone and her past is still making her struggle to fully commit. Will they overcome their past or not?
I very much enjoyed the plot of this book. The Candied Apple Café is not just another regular café. It caters to luxury chocolate lovers. This made it quite appealing to read the back story. There wasn’t any retail/restaurant services woes to put a downer but delicious, artisanal chocolates to delight me.
The dynamic between Mads-Sophia, Sophia- Iona, Mads-Iona and the three together is the major part of the story. Their interactions kept the curiosity alive for me. There was the expected emotional tug of war given the characters pasts, but it was not over the top or off putting. It simply was 2 people overcoming hurdles and moving ahead together. Everything was calm and had a certain emotional sophistication.
So, grab a cuppa hot chocolate and read this wonderful story, especially if you are still deciding on a Christmas day read. It has enough charm and magic to make you smile.
