Lillian’s father, a veteran professor of American literature, is dying of cancer. Lillian senses he is trying to tell her something as he rambles on about Hemingway in a morphine-induced delirium. At his funeral days later, she encounters ghosts from her past who stir long-suppressed memories from the day her mother died twenty-seven years ago. Why, if her mother’s death was an accident, does she harbor guilt, as though she were somehow to blame?
Lillian and her twin sister, Layla, when summoned to their father’s attorney’s office, learn that no money is left in the Stoney family fortune aside from the equity in their two homes—one in Charleston and the other a cottage on nearby Wadmalaw Island. Layla lives in Atlanta and insists on selling the properties. But Lillian refuses to give up these assets without a fight.
She’s desperate to resolve her money problems and to get answers to her questions about the past. Tearing her father’s study apart in search of clues, she discovers a thumb drive in a hollowed-out hardback copy of For Whom the Bell Tolls. The thumb drive, marked For Lillian in his handwriting, contains her father’s memoir. Secluded in the family’s cottage, she immerses herself in her father’s account of his stormy relationship with her mother. What she learns sets her on a journey of self-discovery.

Tangled in Ivy like its title has a lot of things about the lives of its characters entangled in secrets, grief, and mystery. The twin’s dynamic of sibling rivalry is explosive, like calm on the surface but a storm brewing underneath always. The mystery of their mother is one which stares the reader in the face all the time and will be for most part easy to guess. The mystery of the twins however, is a bit entangled before the reader finally uncovers it which is what I enjoyed reading about.
Tangled in Ivy is set in a time when the world was still learning the new realities of society and if you like a little bit of mystery in your family drama pick up Tangles Ivy and lose yourself in the story. A sure way to forget what is going around you and the world at the moment.
