Book review

Unloved by Katy Regnery

A story whose summary, teasers, dialogues appealed to me in a very base, raw way. People who have always felt loved are fortunate, but there are some who feel Unlov – ed/ able. If you too feel that way, this story is for you and I sincerely hope you find the one  who makes you feel you are not Unloved 🙂

Story

My name is Cassidy Porter…

My father, Paul Isaac Porter, was executed twenty years ago for the brutal murder of twelve innocent girls.

Though I was only eight-years-old at the time, I am aware – every day of my life – that I am his child, his only son.

To protect the world from the poison in my veins, I live a quiet life, off the grid, away from humanity.

I promised myself, and my mother, not to infect innocent lives with the darkness that swirls within me, waiting to make itself known.

It’s a promise I would have kept…if Brynn Cadogan hadn’t stumbled into my life.

Now I exist between heaven and hell: falling for a woman who wants to love me, while all along reminding myself that I must remain…

Unloved.

My thoughts

Unloved is the story of Cassidy Porter. Cassidy believes or rather was instilled with the firm believe over his formative, growing years that he is to stay Unloved and quite, away from the world. His father’s sins, grave crimes have shadowed his life for decades untill he comes upon Brynn Cadogan.
Cassidy has made peace with his fate of an isolated life away from humans, love and companionship. After a personal loss and couple years of grief Brynn is ready to move on and visits the place which will help her move on. On a hike, out in the wilderness of Mount Katahadin  Brynn is on a journey to gain closure, say goodbye; in the same wilderness Cassidy remains in the shadows where he, at times, finds solace in the chatter of humans passing by.

A horrifying incident in the wilderness of Katahadin mountains brings Cassidy close to Brynn and sets loose a set of incidents which will literally change their lives.

Now, this is exactly the kind the story which, first made me fall in love with Katy Regnery‘s writing. To be precise the play of emotions and the way it places me right along with the characters. I was right there with Cassidy in his vulnerabilities, uncertainty, fight against everything he was feeling. Cass believes being loved is not for him, so the Unloved part of his character is nerve wrecking and had my heart constantly on edge. It was definitely anxious to wait for his past to blow up his present.

While I waited for that to happen, Cassidy and Brynn where isolated in the middle of nowhere as Brynn was recovering. This inbetween, getting to know each other time is pure love and romance. Their emotions are intense, natural and there is unconscious romance in the little things, gestures Cass does for Brynn even in how he simply reacts to her presence in his life. His reactions are based on innocent, base instincts and there is such satisfying romance in them. All the dark, shadowy past is somehow worth as it only makes his present life unravel beautifully.
The twist at the end, though, is a relief I couldn’t help wonder how the story would have panned out as is. But that’s worth a whole different book and more from the author is only my greed for her work.
To sum it up I feel Unloved is emotionally refreshing and pure romance. The very basic and simple survival emotions that are at the heart/ core of this story are what kept me hooked and emotionally invested.

Cassidy is a beautiful character but then again, that’s exactly what Katy delivers with the heroes in her books.
